The Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Calgary Collection is excited to present the exhibition “Celebrating the Art of Pysanky,” which will take place from April 3-5, 2009, at St. Vladimir’s Cultural Centre, 404 Meredith Road N.E. This is a rare opportunity for Calgarians to view 1000 handwritten eggs, reflecting the regional designs and color schemes of this Ukrainian folk art, as well as other traditional Ukrainian cultural artifacts. The pysanka is a decorated egg that has symbolized nature’s spring rebirth since pagan times. It was common among all Slavic peoples. The symbols and colors are rich in meaning. With the coming of Christianity, the pysanka became an integral part of Easter traditions, particularly in Ukraine where the richest ornamentation developed. Included in the exhibition will be demonstrations of pysanky writing. The Museum, an undiscovered gem in the city, will be open to the public. The Museum Gift Shop will offer supplies, pysanky for purchase, and books about pysanky and their designs. In the spirit of sharing culture and art, we hope that you will promote this event. Attached is a poster for the event outlining exhibit hours. We would be pleased if you could join us for the Opening Reception on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 7-10 P.M. Advance tickets are available.
